She wasn't quite asleep when he picked her up. In all likelihood, it was him picking her up that woke her. And the sense that the most important part of her Exaltation was nearby, waking her enough to be aware that he was holding her and talking, but not enough for her to open her eyes.
She cuddles against his chest with a sigh, smiling briefly and sleepily at his words before murmuring a reply.
